Not only do wealthy people have access to more and better health care, they can afford to shop at Whole Foods (which is known as Whole Paycheck, among my crowd.) They can afford gym memberships, personal trainers, yoga and Pilates classes, and fancy running shoes. They can go skiing, snorkelling, surfing, mountain-climbing, and swimming in their private pools.
I'm talking to the rest of you.
Taking care of yourself isn't easy when you're working two jobs to pay the rent. Not only do you have little time to cook, the local grocery store is lousy. Work out? When? Where? You're so tired from surviving that all you want to do when you get home is flop down in front of the TV.
But you can do something. Something small. Like when you flop down in front of that TV, flop onto the floor. Sit up straight with your legs apart. Stretch to one side. Then the other. Then down forward, as far as you can go, gently. Breathe. Just breathe.
It's a start.

Great suggestion about small steps. About 2 weeks ago, whil ewaiting for water to boil in the morning, I started picking up a full bottle (3 lbs?) and doing lifts from behind my head to full upright extension, some front lifts etc. It felt silly and ALMOST pointless but I started feeling "why not?" I'm waiting anyway. After about a week, my arms felt stronger and I noticed my posture had improved.
ReplyDeleteIt reminded me that something small could be pretty major as you say.

Walk or bike everywhere. You'll never need a gym!
